Melbourne is known for its amazing food, drink and especially coffee. There is so much choice from every corner of the world and we really are spoilt. Since moving to Melbourne, I quickly discovered how popular Friday lunches and drinks were and the Melbourne foodie culture does really well to support and encourage it.

Friday team lunches and after work drinks are an important part of the culture in most Melbourne work places and this ritual plays such a big part in bringing teams together and helps to strengthen working relationships. Melbourne’s CBD has an unbelievable amount of bars and restaurants that are suited to any occasion and any business size whether it’s for a casual after work drink or an end of financial year celebration.

As I have written about so many times before, culture is very important to us here at TwoScots! We often go out for team lunches, after work drinks on a Friday and even the simpler things such as group trips to our local coffee shop before we start the day. The team has a few haunts that have become firm favourites over the years and with our head office being in the CBD, we are lucky enough to have so much on our door step to choose from. We find that each place will suit a different purpose; there are strictly ‘coffee only’ cafes, special Friday lunch venues that run a little pricier, regular sandwich cafes (that are still by no means average) and Friday drinks locations.

Since working for TwoScots, I have always been keen to find out where other businesses frequent and if we can learn anything about a company by where they decide to spend their team time?! So with this being said, I have compiled a list of the TwoScots’ teams favourite places…

For coffee we will head to The Old Chamber on the corner of Collins and Queen Street. We love the staff there; they make the effort to remember our names and individual needs – for example the one TwoScots employee who has a straw with their coffee (mentioning no names). They also sell the most amazing egg wraps if you fancy something to accompany your morning coffee.

Daily lunch:

Equitable Place is a lovely little alley way just off Collins St packed with an array of choice including gorgeous sandwich shops, Brazilian cuisine, soup, sushi and some of the best pho and rice paper rolls you will get in Melbourne’s CBD. Equitable Place is perfect for grabbing a quick lunch and heading back to the office. There is certainly something for everyone here.

‘Special’ Friday lunch venues:

The team has a couple of places that we like to go to for a little something special, if we are celebrating a birthday or have won a team incentive. Red Spice Road on McKillop Street is a firm favourite, it’s always lively and the South East Asian style food is fantastic. We tend to get the banquet between us as we like to have the food chosen for us… the pork belly is amazing!

Gazi, George Calombaris’ Greek restaurant is a close second. We also go for the (seven course!) banquet here and the restaurant is always buzzing with work lunches, you get a real varied range with the banquet and the food is beautiful – the Nutella donut finisher is our favourite!

Friday drinks:

This is highly weather dependent in Melbourne and because of this, plans can change by the hour! For winter days we will just head to Vapiano on Flinders Lane, it has a nice homely feel and they do an especially smooth and creamy Espresso Martini that the team has been known to order more than one round of.

In summer, we will head over to Southbank either to World Bar where you can grab a $5 wine with your membership card or to Riverland, which always has a busy Friday drinks crowd!

Arbory Bar is a newer venue that it situated on one of Flinders Street Station’s oldest disused train tracks. It sits right on the river and has an amazing backdrop of Southbank’s tallest buildings; it looks especially picturesque when the sun is going down.

We find these team lunches and after work drinks bring us closer together. I would love to hear about what your current team or business does to keep its culture thriving. As much as we do have our firm favorites, we are always open to trying out new places and have no doubt that Melbourne’s CBD has so much more to offer! But for now, if you can’t get through to us in the office – you will most likely find the team at one of the above places!
