About the Role:
In this role, you will manage the full payroll function for a medium sized & mixed workforce business, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery across a complex national structure. The organisation operates under multiple industrial instruments & multi-entity, making this a challenging and rewarding environment for a strong people leader. You will lead and mentor a capable payroll team, balance hands-on management with strategic planning, and collaborate with key internal teams to continuously improve the payroll experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency
- Lead, mentor, and develop the payroll team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, awards, and taxation requirements
- Work closely with Finance and People & Culture teams on reporting, budgeting, audits, and project initiatives
- Identify opportunities to streamline payroll processes and implement transformational improvements
- Prepare payroll reports and insights for senior leadership
- Provide expert payroll advice and manage escalated queries
Skills and Experience:
- Extensive experience managing payroll in a medium to large, multi-state organisation, ideally in utilities, infrastructure, or similarly complex sectors
- Strong knowledge of Australian payroll laws, modern awards, and compliance, including complex industrial instruments
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, and developing a payroll team
- Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communicator with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
- Proven ability to drive improvements and manage change across payroll operations
